Tissue Processing

The Allotex tissue processing procedure is designed to offer various shapes with different diameters and thicknesses. The tissue undergoes aseptic recovery, precise shaping, accurate processing, and final sterilization using electron beam irradiation.

The tissue derives from human corneas, procured under strict ethical standards from an EBAA (Eye Bank Association of America) approved eye bank.

Tissue addition procedures have shown to be effective at improving depth of focus and providing clear vision at various distances.

Presbyopia

As people age their eyes’ natural lenses thicken and become stiff, making it difficult to see small print and other small items sharply. This condition leads to headaches, eye strain, and blurry vision. In other words, as we age, presbyopia can impair an active lifestyle. With a growing population of older adults, presbyopia affects the lives of countless people living in our community. In fact, it is estimated that by 2030, nearly 2.1 billion people will suffer from presbyopia[1].

Clinical findings to date have shown that tissue addition technology can improve patients’ near vision substantially, sometimes by an average of 5 lines in emmetropic presbyopic patients, without significantly altering their preoperative distance vision. Patients have benefitted from excellent binocular UCVA at distance, intermediate (70 cm), and near (40 cm), rapid visual recovery, and minimal postoperative discomfort[2].

Hyperopia

Hyperopia is a condition of the eye where distant objects are seen clearly but near objects appear blurred. Children and adults alike can be affected by hyperopia, and experience headaches, eye strain, and blurry vision both from near and far distances.

Refractive surgery for hyperopia has been a challenge for surgeons in the last few decades. On the other hand, tissue addition technology was found to be safe and effective in the refractive treatment of hyperopia. Preliminary research indicates that this procedure improves patients’ visual acuity at near and distance with a notable degree of predictability and stability[3].
